How did people survive in ghettos?

In the 'Ghettos: An overview' section you will have learned how the Nazis developed over 1,000 ghettos across Poland, the Soviet Union, and other countries across Europe.

But, how did the Jews manage to keep themselves and their families alive in these ghettos? In spite of their hardship, many also strove to keep alive their cultural and spiritual life within the ghetto. How did they do this?

In the following Reflective Learning Activity you will use resources contained within The Holocaust Explained to help you answer the question: How did people survive in ghettos?

Activity

Stage 1: Mind mapping

Use the suggested links (right) to enable you to produce a mind map containing notes that will help you answer the question: How did people survive in ghettos? You might want to use the following headings: Culture, Food, Health, Organisations, Religion, Resistance.

Stage 2: Drafting

Use the information in your mind map to help you produce a series of short paragraphs that will be used to produce a PowerPoint presentation that answers the question: How did people survive in ghettos?

Once you have drafted your text, you might wish to select appropriate images for your PowerPoint from within The Holocaust Explained

Stage 3: Communicating

Using the text you have already drafted, build a PowerPoint presentation that answers the question: How did people survive in the ghettos? Choose appropriate colour scheme and font style for the subject matter.

You should build a title slide, together with an appropriate image to illustrate the topic of your PowerPoint.

You should produce a slide for each category. Add the images you have already selected.

Finally add a concluding slide that assesses how successful people were in trying to survive in the ghettos. Explain your answer, giving evidence where appropriate.

Once you have completed your research and PowerPoint save your work and show it to your teacher.
